Early Signs of Perimenopause After 40: Why Your Body Feels Different

Why Everything Starts to Feel Different After 40
Hi lovely,
Have you noticed that things suddenly feel… different?
Maybe you're doing the same workouts but the weight isn’t shifting. Your sleep isn’t great. Your energy feels lower. Or your skin and mood seem to have changed overnight.
If this sounds familiar, please know this: You are not imagining it.
For many women, these changes begin during perimenopause, the stage before menopause when hormones begin to fluctuate.
Unfortunately, most of us were never really educated about what happens to our bodies during this stage of life.
What’s Happening to Your Hormones?
Hormones like oestrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate during perimenopause. These changes can affect many areas of your wellbeing, including:
- metabolism
- sleep
- mood
- energy levels
- skin health
- fat storage
This is why the things that worked in your 20s and 30s may suddenly stop working.
But the good news is that there are simple lifestyle changes that can make a huge difference.
3 Simple Things That Help During Perimenopause
1. Prioritise Protein
Protein becomes increasingly important in midlife. It supports muscle, helps stabilise blood sugar and keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
Try including protein at every meal, such as:
- eggs
- Greek yoghurt
- fish
- chicken
- beans or lentils
2. Strength Training
Strength training becomes incredibly important during menopause because muscle helps support metabolism, bone health and overall strength.
Even two or three sessions per week can make a big difference.
If you'd like something simple to follow at home, I run an online class called Get Up and Go, designed specifically for women navigating midlife and menopause.
You can find it here: Online Group Fitness
3. Manage Stress Where You Can
Stress plays a bigger role in hormone balance than many people realise.
Simple daily habits can help regulate the nervous system, such as:
- walking outside
- stretching or yoga
- breathing exercises
- improving sleep routines
Menopause Is Not the End — It’s a New Beginning
Menopause is often talked about negatively, but it can actually be the start of a really empowering chapter.
When women understand how to support their bodies with the right nutrition, movement and lifestyle habits, they often feel stronger and more confident than ever.
This is something I work on with many women through menopause coaching, personal training and lifestyle support.
